Portfolio feedback

During my online photography course "Mastered: photography with Nick Night" I have submitted my carefully selected portfolio for a review and feedback from a fashion industry professional. My portfolio was assigned for Elle Korhaliller to review. She is a Bookings Editor at Tatler.

Hi Rasa,

You definitely have a strong vision! Huge props for being bold and sticking to images you truly believe in and subjects that inspire you. I would much rather see strong images like this that are thought-provoking, emotive and provocative than see passive, regurgitated and un-inspired fashion shoots.

I love how you seem to work with subjects you are very comfortable with and vice versa and there is absolutely no barrier between you and your model. They are confident and bold in front of your lens and this really pays off as you have definitely created images that I have not seen before! You've chosen what could be considered in this industry as "unconventional" models and again, further creating imagery that is unique and stands out.

I can see that you love black and white images, like many photographers and your lighting is strongest in these shots. You're work with shadows is beautiful and further highlights the muscular form of many of your subjects.

For varieties sake, I would love to see how your images could work on location - I am imaging some of these shots to look even more extremely in the outdoors with your warriors fighting against the elements whether that is blustery winds or using elements such as the sea. I think even though you obviously prefer studio, it's important to show that you can work outside when showing your portfolio to industry professionals.

As much as I admire your work as art pieces, I would be interested to hear what kind of magazines or brands you could see yourself working for commercially. Unfortunately, if you were showing the book to a commercial client you would have to filter out a few of your strongest images which I find to be your strongest work.

I also noticed in most of your images your subject are hardly clothed which works well in most shots but I'd be interested to see how you work with a really strong stylist who can elevate your images and add an extra element of drama to them. Perhaps this would work well when you experiment with shooting outdoors. I am interested to see how you would shoot women too actually!
